Manually searching for and setting crossfade points so that recordings archived across several tapes can become one again is laborious and time-intensive – and it’s a problem nearly every archivist has faced when digitizing analog libraries. No longer.
Working in the background of your networked ingest system(s), AutoCut™ automatically marries up and concatenates the separate carrier data – typically the multiple analog tapes originally required to cover a full length recording – into a single file. All that is required for a successful match is a common portion of signal information of up to 240 seconds in length (though, in practice, an overlap of 30 seconds will usually be sufficient). AutoCut™ searches for a correlation and automatically cross-fades between the two. Result: a perfectly concatenated facsimile – and a huge time saving.
Tolerance – and integrity
In a perfect world, every tape in a multiple archive would have been recorded on to identical media on identical machines, each precisely and uniformly calibrated. Sadly, this is the real world, where sometimes different carriers and different machines were used in the original archiving process. That can result in variations in speed, dynamic levels, frequency response or noise floor on playback. Even in these sub-optimal conditions, however, AutoCut™ can identify a correlation and merge the relevant audio files.
Even more important, AutoCut™ does this without using destructive signal processing, ensuring the integrity of your originals is preserved. And because it writes to the networked server, not directly to the ingest machine, you always have the opportunity to review results and (if necessary) adjust settings before committing.
Invisible mending
can also remove a lot of the frustration of dealing with old media such as spliced and fragile tape. The glue used for splices often loses its effectiveness with the passage of time – but the only way to find out is to run the tape. Without AutoCut™, should a splice come apart (or the tape break) in the middle of digitization, the entire process has to be restarted.
When running AutoCut™, however, a short rewind – to establish a match portion – will allow the remainder to be written as an appended file, and then automatically and seamlessly concatenated. You’ll wonder how you ever managed without it!
